Are the London 2012 mascots a cast-iron hit?

So, welcome to the world, Woo-be-do and Moo-be-do. You might well have been introduced to the world as Wenlock and Mandeville. But, for now, my six-year-old has rechristened you.

Strange names. Over-excited children. And adults talking seriously about made-up characters with a mythical back story. It can be only one of two things: the latest kids’ TV series or Olympic mascot time. continue reading this article

We are recruiting

Seven46 is looking for new blood.

Specifically, two important in-house roles - an Account Manager and a Senior Designer - as well as increasing our network of freelance writers, especially speechwriters.

2010 has already been busy, and is going to get more so, with our ongoing work on Rio 2016 and other Olympic work as well as with the England 2018 campaign. continue reading this article

Vancouver welcomes the world

It’s not often someone gets a standing ovation before the event they’re running.

But that’s exactly what happened here in Vancouver as John Furlong, CEO of the 2010 Organizing Committee, got up to speak at the Opening Ceremony of 122nd IOC Session.

As one of the architects of Vancouver’s bid win, back in 2003, he’s spent a decade dreaming of this week - the week the world arrives and the years of planning become days and nights of spectacular sport, and much more. continue reading this article

What nobody’s telling you about London’s Olympic Park

The brand new facilities rising from the ground in the Olympic Park are living proof of a very old adage: good news is no news.

The total redevelopment of what was a neglected brownfield site into a new beacon for sporting excellence appears to be running as smoothly as the Swiss rail network.

The result is that most people have heard very little about incredible Park progress. continue reading this article

A Rio success story for Seven46

It’s not often your name gets used as a catchphrase by the leadership of a winning Olympic bid in front of the world’s media.

In fact, I can safely say that it’s never happened to me before (we’re more used to being low profile, backroom types!) - and probably never will again.

But, on Saturday, as Rio celebrated its hosting of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games, ‘Nick Varley’ was one of the phrases of the day. continue reading this article

Into the home straight for London 2012

There’s not a lot that a balmy, summer night in Singapore and an overcast day in Stratford have in common - apart from being staging points on the 2012 journey.

Last Friday was the halfway point between London winning the bid and the Olympic Opening Ceremony on 27th July 2012. continue reading this article

Olympic dreaming in Lausanne

It’s not often that you get to spend a Friday morning in ‘a place of dreams’.

Especially when that place is where ‘the waters of Lake Geneva meet an infinite sky.’

Last week I did. The place of dreams is the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
And, as the prose suggests, its location on the shores of Lake Geneva is simply stunning. continue reading this article

Beijing or bust the winning mentality for new-era Team GB

It didn’t seem like it at the time, but one of the moments of my time at Beijing 2008 came when one of Team GB’s greatest hopes bombed out right in front of my eyes.

Shanaze Reade  was supposedly nailed on for a gold medal. She had shown massive determination and skill to come through the BMX rounds and semi-finals, in spite of falls in both. continue reading this article

Beijing 2008: Games on!

Along with an estimated TV audience of three billion, today we’ll be watching the Olympic Opening Ceremony from Beijing.

All the talk is that it will set new standards, and perhaps even surpass Sydney. continue reading this article

Winning beyond 2012

As reunions go, it had a certain edge. Sharing a platform at the Winning Beyond 2012 conference in Manchester were key figures from the London and Paris 2012 bids.

Stage right was Sir Keith Mills, International Chairman of London 2012, and stage left Etienne Thobois, who was Planning and Sport Director of Paris 2012, before becoming the CEO of last year’s Rugby World Cup. continue reading this article
